Gamification on higher education

Cachay-Gutierrez and Cabanillas-Carbonell (2024) researched educational video games to enhance the learning process. They found that video games significantly affected motivation, acquisition, and learning application. The study involved 65 first-cycle students who were divided into two groups. The results showed:

  • Motivation: an increase of 12.9%.
  • Knowledge gained: an increase of 46.34%.
  • Qualification gained: an increase of 12.77%.

Overall, the study concluded that educational video games positively impact the learning process, increasing motivation and knowledge acquisition.

Gamification also has benefits for educators. It can help educators teach more engagingly. They can use game elements, such as points or levels, to provide feedback to students and encourage them to achieve learning goals. In addition, gamification can also increase student engagement in class discussions and team collaboration.

While gamification has many proven benefits, there are some challenges in implementing it in an educational context. Some of the challenges include developing relevant and engaging content, objectively measuring the success of gamification, and concerns about the imbalance between time spent playing and time spent learning.

Gamification has great potential to transform higher education by improving student engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes. However, there needs to be careful planning and research in implementing it to keep it effective and beneficial in the educational experience.
